On the hunt for Wild Boar (roast)!

So this is one of the first blog entries I have ever written so please bear with me.

P and I went out to a farm this evening and visited some wild boars that are being raised about 20 KM from us. We walked along the forested pens that the farmer had set up, which were quite large and seemed like a very nice natural habitat for the boars. He currently has about 80 animals on the farm but he said he has sold about 80 this year so far (sounds like a pretty good year).

We bought some boar sausages and a roast that we are going to cook for Thanksgiving dinner (as all of his wild turkeys are spoken for). Wild boar is definitely not the most inexpensive meat we have found locally so far, but for certain occasions I don't mind spending extra.

Apparently in a normal year he also raises pheasants, chickens, and quail. I am not certain about the quail, but he rattled off a rather long list of poultry and I think I remember quail being on the list.

The farmer also let us know that he will be raising 25 head of cattle starting this fall which will be ready for slaughter next year. We are currently looking to pick up a 1/2 cow so we will have to watch and see when we run low again. But it is always good to know several suppliers.
